How to grow a really great beard (with very little effort)

Published on 5 October 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

It’s cold outside, and while an extra layer of facial hair may do little to protect us from the harsh cold of every single day in the UK, a beard does look pretty good. Our beard trim bookings increase month-on-month throughout the year, with a hefty lot of barber appointments during the colder months, so we know you’re grooming come chilly season. If the ‘growing out’ bit is tricky (and taming unruly hairs is tough), we’ve got advice to help. Here’s your guide on how to grow a beard.

    By Rachel Spedding

    • 1 Don’t shave the neckline

Creating a harsh line between neck and jaw is thought to offer the illusion of 'definition', but nailing that line is seriously tricky. To avoid it looking too 'done' and help create a thicker, fuller vibe, invest in a bear trimmer. Gently thin the beard toward the neck, and it'll blend a whole lot easier.

    • 2 Do trim the cheeks

Should you wish to get rid of travelling-upwards hairs (your cheeks, your choice), steer clear from an aggressive shave so that the beard forms a softer, more natural shape. Shave around the sideburns and the cheeks, to control the direction of hair growth.

    • 3 Do comb it, often

The easiest grooming you’ll do at home. Combing through stray hairs or runaway bristles will keep the shape looking more ‘together’ (especially when slicked with a little beard balm). Flattening wayward hairs will also offer more definition to the face. Hi jaw.

    • 4 Do use beard oil

Beard oil is like a much needed bucket of water to the face. Things can get itchy when sporting facial hair, so a slathering of oil (well, a pea sized amount), will make for a more comfortable beard, and help with styling. Rub between your palms then stroke downwards to direct the hairs.

    • 5 Visit the barber

Heading to the barbers is more than just a beard groom, it’s like a mini spa trip (in a half an hour slot). From a facial steam to a swift head massage, no two barbers are made equal, so make sure to peruse the menu of grooming extras on offer. Above all else, a trip to the pro will ensure your beard-growing journey is a smooth one.

    FAQs

How do you create a natural looking beard neckline?

Skip shaving a harsh line and use a beard trimmer to thin the beard towards your neck. This technique helps your beard blend more smoothly and creates a fuller, thicker appearance.

What’s the best way to tame unruly beard hairs?

Comb your beard regularly to keep stray hairs under control and achieve a defined shape. Applying a bit of beard balm helps slick hairs down and makes your beard look more polished.

Why should you use beard oil?

Beard oil makes your beard more comfortable and easier to style. Using a pea-sized amount reduces itchiness and lets you shape your beard by directing the hairs downwards for a neater look.

How can visiting a barber benefit your beard grooming?

A barber provides more than just a beard trim; the experience is like a mini spa trip with extras like facial steam and head massages. Professional care helps ensure your beard grows in smoothly and is maintained to suit your preferred style.

Should you aggressively shave your beard cheeks?

Avoid aggressively shaving the cheeks for a softer, more natural beard shape. Shaving just around the sideburns and cheeks helps control the direction of growth while keeping the overall beard look gentle and tidy.
