Electrolysis and hair removal: the bare essential facts

Published on 4 May 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

If getting rid of unwanted hair forever sounds like an absolute dream, you’ll welcome electrolysis with open arms. This treatment first hit the beauty scene back in 1875. And while laser hair removal is still a bit speedier, electrolysis has a loyal army of followers – and it’s not hard to see why.

    • 1 It's the only hair removal method that's certified 'permanent'

Although the effects of laser hair removal last for years, electrolysis is currently the only method that's allowed to call itself permanent – well, at least according to the FDA, a strict government agency in charge of regulating cosmetic procedures. Electrolysis destroys the hair's growth centre, so it's highly unlikely any new fuzz will appear once your sessions are finished.

    • 2 It's for every skin and hair type

While light-based methods like IPL and laser target the hair pigment melanin, electrolysis zaps directly into each follicle. It's anti-discrimination, if you will, and treats all hair types equally. That's thin hair, fair fuzz – if you're a natural blonde, that's good news for you. It's also fine if you have a tan. Ibiza, here we come.

    • 3 It's precise

Your technician gently inserts a needle into each follicle, targeting them individually. That sounds painful, but panic not, it doesn’t break the skin. It can take anything from 15 to 30 sessions to get each and every hair.

Going once a week or once a fortnight is a good way to get started, and after the first few stints you won't need to spend as long in the chair.

    • 4 It works on every part of your body

Yep, even the eyebrows. Because each hair gets individual treatment, electrolysis is actually best for smaller areas like your upper lip or chin. That being said, it's absolutely fine to get a full leg or bikini line done. Someone said Ibiza. We're listening.

    FAQs

Is electrolysis really a permanent hair removal method?

Yes, electrolysis is the only hair removal method officially certified as permanent. It destroys the hair’s growth centre, so it is highly unlikely that any new hair will appear once your sessions are complete. Other methods like laser may last for years, but they are not considered permanent.

Can electrolysis work for all skin tones and hair types?

Electrolysis treats every skin tone and all hair types. It doesn’t depend on hair pigment, making it a good option for people with thin, fair or blonde hair, as well as those with a tan. This universal approach sets it apart from methods like IPL and laser that only target pigment.

How many electrolysis sessions do you usually need?

You may need anywhere from 15 to 30 sessions to remove all unwanted hair. Starting with weekly or fortnightly appointments is common, and after the first few sessions, the time you spend in the chair usually decreases. The exact number varies based on your hair and area treated.

Which areas of your body can you treat with electrolysis?

You can use electrolysis on any part of your body, including sensitive spots like your eyebrows or upper lip. It is especially effective for smaller areas but is also suitable for larger zones such as your legs or bikini line. Each hair is treated individually for precise results.

Does electrolysis break the skin or feel painful?

Electrolysis does not break the skin when performed correctly, despite using a fine needle for each follicle. The procedure is precise, and while the idea might sound uncomfortable, the technique does not pierce the outer layers of skin, helping minimize sensations during treatment.
