BTW, shoulder length hair (or the ‘awkward growing out phase’) looks great

Published on 13 January 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

For some, seeing in a new season means catching up on hair cuts. Ticking ‘trim’ off the life admin list, or indulging in a little salon time (because we’ve stuck out this ‘winter’ thing for quite long enough), could mean trying something new. And shoulder-length hair, my looking-for-inspiration friends, is the cut you should try.

It inspires flashbacks of the ‘growing out’ phase we all endured after mum’s insistence of having a bob throughout our childhood (ahead of her time on the trends it would seem). It’s not so short that ‘transformation’ springs to mind, but it’s a definite shift from longer locks, and combines that cool blunt-ends vibe we talked about at length not so long ago.

Whether your natural hair texture is curled or straight, the just-touching-shoulders length of this cut will carry it, and it’s just long enough to slick back into a low bun for practicality. And because it looks really, really good.

If you’ve just invested in an oversized hair clip (haven’t we all), slide it to the side, or layer a few – evidence how great that looks right here. This is my Monday morning hairstyle.

So, if you’re ready to embrace shoulder-length then a) I credit myself for convincing you, and b) here’s some inspiration to take-with to the salon.

    FAQs

What makes shoulder-length haircuts a good choice for a new season?

Shoulder-length haircuts offer a refreshing change without being a dramatic transformation. This length brings a cool, blunt-ends vibe and works well if you’re looking for inspiration to revive your style after winter.

Can you style shoulder-length hair in versatile ways?

Yes, you can easily style shoulder-length hair in multiple ways. It’s just long enough to slick back into a low bun for practicality, and you can use oversized hair clips or layer hair accessories for a stylish look.

Does shoulder-length hair suit different hair textures?

Shoulder-length hair suits both curled and straight natural hair textures. The just-touching-shoulders length works well regardless of whether your hair is naturally curly or straight, providing flexibility for various looks.

Why are oversized hair clips popular with shoulder-length hair?

Oversized hair clips are a trendy, practical accessory for shoulder-length cuts. They allow you to easily slide your hair to the side or layer clips for creative styles, making them a go-to choice for quick Monday morning hairstyles.

Is a shoulder-length haircut practical for everyday wear?

A shoulder-length haircut is highly practical for daily life. It is easy to maintain, can be styled up or down, and gives you the freedom to try different looks while still being manageable.
