Hairstyles your bridesmaid won’t hate

Published on 20 April 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Of course you’re thrilled to be marrying your beau/beaux, but getting your hair and makeup done comes close second, no? Wonder if your bridesmaids are feeling the same? They will be if you take a personalised approach to their looks (we’re speaking from experience here). Before you start dreaming about matching updos, bare in mind the length, hair type and style of your individual friends. Our advice would be to steer clear of anything too faddy or fussy. Sure, boho flower crowns may be the wedding trend du jour, but understated ’dos will protect against retrospective cringing. Consider swapping them out for dainty flowers scattered throughout the hair, or do the same with some subtly placed light-catching clips. Pinterest might be awash with fish plaits  and elaborate, 100-bobby-pin creations, but just know that there are relaxed options out there. We, for one, are big fans of the undone look. But regardless of what you choose, it’s worth remembering that what works for one may not work for another and who says all your BFFs have to look the same anyway? To help you on your hunt, we pulled together a selection of looks your bridesmaids couldn’t help but love…

FAQs

How do you choose bridesmaid hairstyles that suit everyone?

Take into consideration the length, hair type and style of each individual in your bridal party. What works for one person may not work for another, so personalised choices are key to making everyone feel their best.

What are some modern alternatives to traditional bridesmaid updos?

Opt for relaxed styles like undone looks instead of highly structured updos or trends requiring lots of pins. Subtly scattered dainty flowers or light-catching clips can give a fresh and understated feel without being too faddy or complex.

Should all your bridesmaids have matching hairstyles?

All your bridesmaids do not have to look the same. Embrace individuality to highlight each person’s unique look, rather than insisting on identical styles across your bridal party.

Why is it better to avoid overly trendy bridesmaid hairstyles?

Choosing understated styles helps prevent retrospective cringing in the future. Boho flower crowns may be popular now, but simpler, timeless options will look great in photos for years to come.

How can you personalise bridesmaid hair accessories?

Swap matching crowns for dainty flowers scattered throughout the hair or use subtly placed light-catching clips. These personalised details create a modern and sophisticated effect tailored to each bridesmaid.
