Days 11 & 12 - Gymmin' it up

Days 11 & 12 - Gymmin' it up

I know my fitness plan says I intend to get fitter by walking, but it also mentions keeping up with the Pilates classes. This means going to the gym. Since the start of this challenge my "fitness sense" has been enhanced, meaning I have been paying more attention to what goes on in the gym, rather than simply zooming in and out with my "I really have no time to talk" face on.

I was also worried that I was putting too much emphasis on my lower body, when really my arms are the weakest link. So for days 11 and 12 I decided to try something new and do some slightly more serious gym workouts, which consisted of a Body Balance class preceded by interval training on Thursday and a Pilates class followed by interval training today.

I'm not a huge fan of interval training. I find it draining and ultimately boring. However, several studies have proven that this is indeed a very effective way of skipping your way to fitness in small bursts of cardio and endurance training. It also burns the same amount of calories in half an hour as a tough walk in 45 mins to an hour, making more time efficient.

As for immediate results? Pain. A lot of pain, actually. And mostly in places where I didn't suspect any muscles to exist. I know, I know, no pain, no gain... but at least, in my view, you should enjoy the pain. Sounds almost masochistic, but you get the drift. I like walking. Same goes with Pilates and Body Balance, or Yoga. I get true pleasure from these activities. Getting out of breath and sweating all over machines that other human beings have touched and will touch after me (in equally sweaty conditions) really doesn't do it for me.

I gave it a go, will probably do it again simply because I know it's good for me – like that little voice from your childhood: "Drink your milk, you will get strong bones".

I still won't enjoy either.
