How to have Victoria’s Secret hair

Published on 29 November 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Just when you were feeling good about yourself, up pops the Victoria’s Secret fashion show to give you a reality check. Grrr. Yes, as Gigi, Alessandra and Co prepare to strut their stuff in Paris, we felt it only right to pay homage to the real star of the show – the hair.  If you can get past the sexy lingerie and rock hard bodies, then you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Those waves, that volume, the way it bounces effortlessly off each Angel’s scantily clad shoulder. It’s the hair we all secretly dream of but never quite manage to achieve. Mostly because it requires a degree in hair wizardry.

The woman responsible for the Victoria’s Secret hair is celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa who perfectly fuses beach waves, with a body-boosting blow dry. Careful analysis (slash stalking) of the backstage beauty area has revealed to us a three prong approach to creating the look;

1) A smoothing blow dry to begin

2) Hair is then set in large rollers to create body and volume

3) The rollers are taken out and tongs (Potempa uses her own Beachwaver Styling Tool) are used to create the trademark, face-framing tousles.

The sad fact remains that no amount of dry shampoo and backcombing in your bedroom can achieve such levels of glamour…#thestruggleisreal.

FAQs

How do you achieve the signature Victoria’s Secret hair look?

You achieve the signature Victoria’s Secret hair by using a three-step process: a smoothing blow dry, setting hair in large rollers, then adding waves with a curling tong. This creates body, volume and face-framing tousles. The style is iconic for its effortless bounce and glamorous waves.

What hairstyling tool is used for Victoria’s Secret waves?

The Beachwaver Styling Tool by Sarah Potempa is used to create the classic Victoria’s Secret waves. After removing large rollers, the tool is used to form face-framing and tousled waves that define the model’s signature look.

Why is it difficult to recreate Victoria’s Secret hair at home?

It is difficult to recreate the Victoria’s Secret hair at home because it requires professional techniques and tools. The style relies on a specific sequence of a blow dry, large rollers, and curling tongs that most people struggle to replicate without expert skills.

What are the key steps to getting glamorous, voluminous hair like the models?

Key steps include starting with a smoothing blow dry, setting your hair in large rollers for volume, and finishing with tongs for tousled waves. Each step helps build the body, shape and bounce that define this glamorous hairstyle.
