Festival tiaras

Published on 10 May 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Take one head of artfully dishevelled hair, throw on a 90s tiara and you’ve got yourself the festival look. Yes, the grunge princess is back this summer thanks to the catwalks of Saint Laurent and we can’t think of a cooler way to dress our hair for Glasto et al.

The French fashion house might have been responsible for reviving this epic trend but it’s the original grunge princess, Courtney Love, you should look to for your inspiration. Back in the 90s, her signature dishevelled, rooty blonde hair reached new heights of cool when she accessorised it with a diamante tiara at the Oscars.

Fast forward to now and you can make it as girly, or as grungy (both is ideal) as you please. Blogger Chiara Ferragni wore hers with smooth, blown out hair at Coachella but we’ll be wearing ours with lots of natural texture and a truckload of dry shampoo to give it something to cling to. Feeling the urge to pop out and do a spot of tiara shopping? Our Editorial Director, Liz Hambleton suggests going vintage for the most authentic look. ‘Hit up your local flea market or car boot sale for the best buys, alternatively try department store bridal boutiques for a huge selection of tiaras and ornate headpieces. So much cooler than a flower crown. Just saying…

FAQs

How do you create a grunge princess festival hair look?

You just need artfully dishevelled hair paired with a 90s-style tiara. Add natural texture using dry shampoo for grip and wear the tiara for that standout festival vibe. This look draws inspiration from Courtney Love and recent Saint Laurent catwalk trends.

Where can you find the best tiaras for a festival hairstyle?

For the most authentic look, try your local flea markets or car boot sales for vintage finds. Department store bridal boutiques also offer a huge selection of tiaras and ornate headpieces. Vintage options often add unique character to your festival style.

How do you style your hair to hold a tiara securely?

Adding lots of natural texture and using dry shampoo helps your hair grip the tiara. Smooth, blown out hair is another option, as shown by some festival-goers. The key is giving your hair something for the tiara to cling to so it stays in place.

Which celebrities inspired the grunge princess hair trend?

Courtney Love is the original inspiration, especially with her iconic dishevelled blonde hair and diamante tiara. The look is now revived on the runways of Saint Laurent and seen at festivals like Coachella. This combination makes the grunge princess style both modern and nostalgic.

Why is a tiara considered cooler than a flower crown for festivals?

A tiara brings a unique, edgy twist to festival hair that feels fresh compared to the traditional flower crown. It channels both a girly and grungy vibe that stands out in the crowd. For those after an alternative festival accessory, a tiara offers maximum impact.
