How to nail a glossy (not gothy) black manicure

Published on 3 August 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

It’s set to be the nail trend of next season but we say why wait until then to start wearing it. Black, glossy and polished to within an inch of its life, we think this moody manicure could be the answer to the inevitable onset of summer nail fatigue (#nomorecoralplease!)

True, at this time of year we should we be embracing the slim chance we have to do full on summer-dressing, but there’s something quite exciting about fast-tracking to the season to come. Biker jackets, slouchy cashmere jumpers – sounds good doesn’t it? The same applies to looking down and seeing your post-holiday hands sporting a luxe, dramatic, black nail polish.

Worn on long (within reason please) perfectly manicured, lady like nails, you’ll find black quite the flattering colour. Most salons have a great selection of  blacks in both regular and gel formulations, but after much testing, we’d advise you go for a gel polish to get the glossiest effect. CND Shellac Polish and Nails Inc Pro both have a great selection of sultry black shades which promise to look glossy, rather than gothy. Other tops tips include massaging cuticle oil onto your nails every-night to keep the skin soft and supple, black nails and flaking cuticles do not a good look make…

Go glossy now

FAQs

Why should you try black glossy nails before next season?

Wearing black, glossy nails now is a bold way to refresh your manicure and overcome summer nail fatigue. Embracing this look early brings a dramatic and polished style, especially if you’re already tired of traditional summer shades like coral.

How do you keep black nails looking glossy and polished?

Choosing a gel polish gives you the glossiest effect and longer-lasting shine. Massaging cuticle oil onto your nails every night keeps the skin soft and prevents flaking, ensuring your manicure always looks polished and luxe.

Which brands offer gel black nail polishes with a glossy finish?

CND Shellac Polish and Nails Inc Pro offer a wide selection of sultry black gel shades that promise a glossy, dramatic look. These brands focus on providing high-shine finishes that appear luxurious without looking too gothic.

What nail length works best for black polish?

Black polish looks especially flattering on long, perfectly manicured, lady-like nails. Keeping your nails within a reasonable length helps maintain a classy and elegant style, highlighting the dramatic effect of the color.

How can you prevent black nails from looking messy or dry?

Massage cuticle oil onto your nails every night to keep the skin around them soft and supple. Avoiding flaking cuticles is key, as dry skin can ruin the effect of a sleek, black manicure.
