4 health boosting benefits of deep tissue massage

25 May 2018 by Beth Ryan

In our book, deep tissue massage should be up there with goji berries, kale and avocado when it comes to health benefits. And talking of books, we could literally write one about the perks of this therapy. It works the muscles deep down inside your body – those ones you never knew you had – so can actively help to heal aches and pains. On second thoughts, our diaries are pretty full so we’ll park the book writing for now – but here’s a quick summary.

  • 1 It can reduce blood pressure

Getting a regular deep tissue rubdown can help to reduce your blood pressure and lower your heart rate.  OK, it doesn't mean we can have a second helping of Ben & Jerry's, but every little helps. The therapist tends to go a bit harder than usual so get ready for extra pressure.

  • 2 It can help manage chronic stress

As well as lowering stress hormones and bringing on the happy ones, a strong tension massage can banish the physical side effects of stress. It's basically the adult version of Calpol, except it treats tension headaches and tight shoulders, rather than sore throats.

  • 3 ...And chronic pain

Lingering back pain, arthritic joint aches and even labour pains have been shown to drop after a good hard massage. That means your muscles are more likely to completely relax and let go of tension. Well worth the time on the table. And that's goodbye, paracetamol.

  • 4 It can stop scar tissue from forming

If you've pulled a muscle and it's stubbornly refusing to get better, deep tissue massage can help to reduce swelling, letting blood flow freely into the damaged area. This brings plenty of oxygen and nutrients which can help to repair the damaged tissue. Yep – that means the sympathy card's less valid for getting out of the housework, but you'll be back feeling smug at that early morning pilates class.

We'll take one. With Treatwell, you can book beauty online at all your favourite salons – simple, hassle-free, and you can do it on the go. Discover amazing salons in your area.
