Get ready to spice things up. Everybody experiences periods in their life when they may not have enough time or energy for regular sex. Although these lulls are completely normal (particularly at times when you are under a lot of stress), it can nonetheless have a negative impact on your relationship. Sex counselling with an experienced therapist can help you to talk through your difficulties and find a way to get your love life back on track – great news for you and your partner.
Your first visit to the therapist will be in the form of a consultation. The therapist will sensitively listen to you describe your problem, before helping you to decide what form of treatment will best meet your needs. If it is decided that further therapy sessions would be beneficial, then it will be advised that you see the therapist regularly on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
Therapy sessions last for about an hour each and mostly consist of talking over different issues so that the therapist can help you understand the factors underlying your problem. However, it’s not all talk and no action - you will be given some homework tasks to try with your partner in the privacy of your own home.
Many people feel uncomfortable at the thought of discussing their sex life with a stranger, but don’t worry – an experienced therapist will always be sensitive and understanding, and will do their best to make you feel nice and relaxed.
You don’t have to be in a relationship to visit a sex counsellor – therapists can also help individuals who wish to discuss their sexuality or sexual dysfunction.
Sex therapy can help you to become more assertive generally, and you can benefit by transferring this new found confidence to other areas in your life.
