It’s a case of different strokes for different folks. If you prefer your massage mild and moderate, lymphatic drainage is one tender treatment that works wonders after a night out on the town. Ideal for detoxification and cleansing, the massage stimulates the body’s lymphatic system helping to eliminate toxins and waste that make you feel sluggish and slow.
Unlike some other forms of massage, lymphatic drainage is a therapeutic treatment that uses very light pressure, a combination of long, gentle, rhythmic strokes and soft pumping movements to increase lymphatic flow.
For those unsure of what ‘lymph’ actually is, it’s not (despite it’s odd sounding name) a character from Lord of The Rings, but a clear yellowish fluid that flows around the body carrying white blood cells and delivering those all important antibodies to our tissues and organs. Without the flow of lymph pumping through our bodies, our immunity would be lowered and we’d succumb to every illness and infection going.
However, we don’t always look after our lymph as best we could and day after day, we pump it full of toxins without realising. By eating badly, drinking to excess, stuffing our faces with sugary treats and living in pollution filled cities, we’re pushing our lymph to the limit and piling more toxins into our body than the lymph flow can flush away.
The aim of the massage is to move excess fluid away from areas that become congested so that it can continue to drain away normally. By lightly massaging these areas in the direction of the lymph nodes, located in the neck, armpits and groin, your lymph flow will be enhanced, your toxins reduced and your immune system refreshed. Warmth also helps to increase lymphatic flow so the massage is performed in a heated room, although this does mean stripping off. No need to panic though, as your masseur will drape you in discreetly placed towels so your modesty is kept protected and concealed.
Each session can last between 30 minutes and two hours depending on whether the massage is focused on a specific area or the entire body, but your initial consultation will determine the number and frequency of future sessions.

Women who are cursed with problem periods and PMS can also reap the rewards although it’s not advised to book in during the time of the month.
As with most massage treatments, relaxation and muscle relief can be expected, but lymphatic drainage massage is said to be especially good for sickly souls who suffer regularly from common illnesses like colds and flu because of its effect on the immune system. It has also been advised that people with low energy or who have dysfunctional respiratory systems try out the treatment as it can facilitate general feelings of health and vitality.
Although the treatment helps build up immunity, people suffering with cancer, diabetes, thyroid or kidney problems, asthma or epilepsy should seek medical advice before treatment.
