Say goodbye to waiting hours in the doctor’s surgery, queuing in the chemist and dosing up on the entire contents of every pre packaged medicine going. Thanks to homeopathy, getting sick may not be as bad as you thought...
Homeopathy is a medicine system which is based upon treating the individual with highly diluted substances, usually in the form of a tablet. This then triggers the natural system of healing within the body. Based on your symptoms, a homeopath will match the appropriate medicine to you. Personal doctor anyone?
Despite studies seemingly showing its effectiveness, science cannot yet explain exactly how homeopathy works. The therapy uses the principle of ‘like cures like’; the idea that a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure the same symptoms in someone who’s unwell.
A typical first consultation with a homeopath is usually an hour in length and involves the practitioner asking detailed questions about your current health, medical history and lifestyle. Each individual is treated holistically and so your homeopath needs to understand how your symptoms affect your life and how you experience them. The more questions, the better matched your medicine will be. What a perfect excuse to stay chatting!
Further consultations will involve discussions about any changes that have occurred, so there can be an understanding of how you have responded to your original prescription and what the next step will be.
As homeopathy treats the person rather than the ‘disease’, it has the potential to help patients with a variety of different conditions. Some of the most common illnesses treated by homeopaths are recurrent infections like colds and tonsillitis, skin conditions, chronic fatigue, migraines, anxiety and insomnia.
Homeopathic remedies can be safely used alongside normal medicines and they do not meddle with anything that has been prescribed by your regular GP. As homeopathic medicines are non-toxic, there will be no unexpected or nasty side effects and they are safe for pregnant women, babies... and everyone else of course. Result!
Hippocrates, the so-called ‘Father of Medicine' from Ancient Greece once said that there are two laws of healing: the ‘Law of Opposites’ and the’ Law of Similars’. Homeopathy treats the patient with medicines using the Law of Similars, whereas orthodox medicine uses the Law of Opposites (hence the ‘anti-’ prefix in front of the names of many conventional medicines: antihistamines, antibiotics etc.)
