If you hate feeling all oily after a massage, Garshan may well be what you’ve been looking for. A form of dry massage, the treatment is performed by either one or two therapists, who use their gloved hands, sponges or a dry brush to remove dead skin. A combination of circular and sweeping strokes is used to loosen impurities and encourage lymph drainage, with gentle pressure being applied to delicate areas. Firmer pressure is applied to areas where the skin is thicker, such as the soles of the feet – good news for those who find a light touch a bit ticklish.
Typically, a Garshan massage lasts for an hour – although it is often followed by an oil massage and time in the steam room for maximum effect.
Fans of Garshan say that this form of massage works wonders for cellulite and weight loss, thanks to the detoxifying effect of the strokes used. It can also help to improve digestion, reduce sluggishness and ease depression. Who knew that a humble pair of gloves could achieve so much?

Sesame oil is often used to nourish the body after Garshan, as Ayurvedic wisdom dictates that you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t be happy to put in your mouth.
