Smile, and the world smiles with you. Grin, squint and grimace and you’ll be laughing along too. Face yoga involves pulling a plethora of funny faces in the hope you’ll stave off wrinkles for good. By putting your face through its paces, facial exercises can help tone up sagging skin and create a crease-free complexion. The most natural face lift you can get, this is perfect if you want to shed some years without submitting to surgery.
Based on the theory that your face muscles work in exactly the same manner as your body muscles, if you can tighten and tone them in one place, you should be able to in another. Drawing on some of the techniques used in vocal training, the facial exercises, poses and breathing methods all work together to detox the skin and help it to stay strong and supple.
Forget the lotus, eagle and tree pose, when it comes to face yoga it’s all about the lion, the Marilyn and the bumblebee. Expect to find yourself blowing kisses, engaging in stop-start smiling, rolling your tongue to make vibrating sounds and partaking in excessive yawning sessions. All of the moves are designed to stretch different muscles in your face and if you can stop yourself from laughing, you should be able to feel the tension wash away. Because practitioners believe a lot of stress is held in the face, they suggest that by learning to relax your facial muscles, you should be able to start reducing those wrinkles immediately.
With no set routine, you can practise face yoga on your own for 10 minutes a day or 10 hours if you so wish. If you have a high embarrassment threshold, you could even practise them while you work, although you might be on the receiving end of a few dodgy looks. If you prefer a more structured environment, some yoga classes already have face yoga on the menu, so check with the teacher to see if they incorporate any face-specific poses along the way.
If you want an anti-ageing treatment without all the lotions and potions, face yoga could help you look 10 years younger without any extras. Suitable for anyone and everyone, it’s a fun, free and easy way to keep that face trim and taught. It can also help to reduce stress levels, leaving you with a clear head and clarity of mind.
Face yoga is catching on in celebrity circles. Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow are already reported to be dedicated fans. .
