Does wellbeing lie at the end of the rainbow? Colour therapy is an ancient, alternative therapy that uses colour with the aim of stimulating brighter moods and encouraging the body’s own healing process.
A bit like waving a red flag at a bull, colours can create instinctive reactions, many of which will occur on a subconscious level. Colour therapists believe that these reactions can affect not only your emotional state but your physical and spiritual states too. For example, red light is thought to stimulate the adrenal glands, raising the blood pressure and pulse rate, whereas blue or white light will calm you down.
Your therapist could expose you to colour and light in all sorts of different ways. In some cases, it’s as simple as making physical contact with an item of the right colour. There are dozens of different approaches, including the use of gemstones, candles, wands, prisms, colour fabrics, oils, bath treatments, glasses, lights or lenses. These colours will sometimes be applied to specific areas of the body, for example, by shining a light through a prism to relieve neck pain.
A single consultation will take around an hour and further sessions may be recommended. If you are receptive to chromotherapy, it can become a way of life; you may choose to continue the therapy by wearing and surrounding yourself with your unique palette of beneficial colours.
