With Chavutti Thirumal controlled, single-foot pressure is combined with elements of yoga, dance and the Southern Indian martial art of Kalarippayattu to tread the path to good posture, suppleness and pain relief.
Chavutti Thirumal is sometimes called Indian Rope Massage because the masseuse uses a rope, strung at head-height, for balance and control. You might be wincing at the thought of someone trampling all over you, but the therapist will always have one foot on the floor to keep maximum control over the pressure applied. Long, smooth and continuous strokes are used to ease out deep-tissue tension.
Chavutti Thirumal is great for sports people and anyone who needs good flexibility. The therapy aims to improve posture too, so if you suffer from mild back problems or muscular pain it might help to get rid of those niggling aches and twinges in the long term.
If you're a tad prudish, or just a bit shy, be warned that this is a full-body massage with oil, which means taking all of your clothes off. You may be offered a small 'modesty towel', but some strokes involve a smooth sweep from neck to ankle so it's unlikely to live up to its name.
