Feeling bamboozled by so many massage options? Maybe it’s time to try a bamboo massage. Known for its healing properties, this rather unusual holistic therapy works to calm and energise you from head to toe. Like the techniques found in a Hot Stone massage, warm bamboo is used to roll and knead the tissue to help alleviate muscle tension and general aches and pains. Talk about no cane, no gain!

What to expect?

You’ll feel relaxed from the moment you enter the room. Once you disrobe and lie down on the treatment table, the therapist will rub on some silky oils to get your skin ready for the bamboo. The actual bamboo is heated up and used in a roller-like fashion, stretching and elongating muscles to relieve all sorts of aches and pains. This is an all-body treatment, so expect to be bambooed from top to bottom. The ends of the cane are used to push pressure points on the soles of your feet; perfect for fixing the damage we do with our heels!

Know before you go

  • Bamboo massage can aid weight loss by breaking down fat cells. Don’t expect to walk out with legs like a supermodel after the first treatment; a therapist will recommend at least four sessions for visible results.
  • Massage increases the rate of blood flow and the delivery of oxygen to the tissues. This means that the oxygen rich blood needed to repair damaged and tense muscles is supplied and lasts for more than 72 hours post treatment.
  • If you have any injuries or sore spots, make sure you discuss them with your therapist first to make sure it’s the right therapy for you.

The sciencey stuff

The warmth of the bamboo is a big factor in the effectiveness of this massage. The heat allows deeper tissue penetration, meaning the therapist can get to the toughest of knots. What’s more, bamboo massage is thought to be helpful in treating all sorts of muscular injuries, aches and pains, and can even benefit people who suffer from multiple sclerosis or fibromyalgia. Who knew a bamboo could be so genius?
