Hyperhidrosis (or excessive sweating) is a common condition which is particularly embarrassing for those affected by it. Most often the condition affects the armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis) and/or the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis). Excessive sweating can cause several problems such as staining of clothes and erosion of self-confidence.
What can I do about it? Thankfully, a solution is possible. It has been shown that injection of Botox® into affected areas can reduce sweating by around 90% and can provide relief from this troublesome condition. Botox® works by blocking the signals to the sweat glands to produce sweat and therefore sweating is blocked even in hot and or stressful situations. Gradually over time, new nerve endings sprout and the sweat glands are reactivated so a repeat treatment is usually recommended after 6-12 months.
What does the treatment involve? Similar to facial Botox® injections, treatment of hyperhidrosis involves several tiny injections of Botox® spaced around 1cm apart in the affected area. Treatment takes between 15-30 minutes depending on the number of areas affected. Discomfort is minimal and local anaesthetic is not required.
