Gua sha orginates from Tradional Chinese medicine (TCM) in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising. It is renound for releasing unhealthy blockages from stagnated areas to stimulate blood flow and healing. In the west it is also referred to as 'spooning' or 'scraping' or in French is known as 'tribo-effleurage.' The Gua sha instrument is used as hands alone are not always effective in releasing deep rooted stagnation. The beneficial strokes are made in a downward motion around the affected region, following which distinct redding of the skin 'sha' is observed. The redding is the desired visible reponse which allows immediate relief and imparts reduction of: inflammation, coldness, tightness and pain from the superficial and deep layers of the body. It is particularly effective in cold, muscoskeletal (stiff joints) and in lung complaints.
