My girlfriend and I (both mid 20's) booked this 2 night spa break for our anniversary (28th-30th dec), mainly because we I took us to the Kidderminster hotel for a 2night spa break for valentines before and we loved it that much we thought we'd do it again. I am in the process of complaining to Great Danes and this is why:
Food: The offer clearly states a "Three-course table d'hote dinner each night, choosing from the a la carte menu up to an allocation of £22 per person". Now I know there were Christmas functions going on, but this is no excuse to be told on the first night the only option was the buffet. We weren't even told when we booked our table 4/5 hours previous (if we'd have known we would've gone somewhere in town) we were only told as we sat down. The buffet food was a pretty poor standard, and for my vegetarian girlfriend she had a really really poor selection. On the 2nd night we did have the A La Carte, but the quality was average at best - what you'd expect of an average Weatherspoons. My girlfriend had a dodgy stomach after the food - might have been something else but I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to the poor food. Breakfast was the only good meal - the extra items you could order from the menu were a nice touch and of a good quality. All this is was more annoying because at our stay at Mercure Kidderminster, all the food was completely first class from an awesome menu selection - definitely the highlight of that hotel.
Staff: Some people were really helpful did everything perfectly. Some though, were rubbish - to the point of hoovering around us when we were still finishing our meal before the restaurant had even closed!
Room + Spa: Our room was good with a comfy bed - not the biggest room but perfect for us. Also the spa was really good quality - fairly small but good swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Can't comment on the massages as we didn't book any.
OVERALL: Room and Spa were good, but the food (especially the buffet) was so bad it almost ruined our anniversary weekend. We were really looking forward to this after our Kidderminster stay, so it was really disappointing that the Great Danes failed where Kidderminster excelled.
