Although this was a training session, I wasn’t given the chance to give my feedback after my haircut two weeks ago, therefore I am writing it here now.
The experience itself was delayed and long. I was expecting this, but the senior stylist saying that I had ‘difficult hair to deal with’ and that I ‘shouldn’t expected too much’ wasn’t very nice! It felt like he was accusing me of breaking off my own hair due to extensions (which he called a ‘wave’ for some reason) and/or doing my hair at home myself which caused my breakage- both of which were untrue. I was shocked that my final haircut was an inch shorter than the senior stylist said that it would be, which is why I was upset. Afterwards, I did thank the trainee (via his translator as he couldn't speak English) and explained my reaction to him, so hopefully he understands.

Although I was asked by the senior stylist what I wanted when I came in, I think that it would help the trainees if they had an opinion about what to do too. This is what happens in some of the Hair and Beauty training colleges that I have visited in London, and I think that it would help the trainees here also. Also, no protective spray was used on my hair during the blow-dry or straightening iron process. This surprised me as stylists have always suggested this and used some kind of protection on my hair before.
Because I have ‘difficult hair’ as I was told, I knew that my trainee would be suffering with the thickness of my hair. Because of this, I suggested that my hair would be better if it was blow dried first and then cut, which didn’t go down well with the senior stylist (who thought that I was questioning his skills, instead of the trainee’s). He explained that this was a training session, which of course I was aware of, but his tone was unnecessarily sarcastic. I know that another customer was upset and that the senior stylist was stressed by this (he spoke openly about this in my presence), but it was unprofessional to take it out on me. By making me stand up while he corrected the back of my hair, I felt like I was being punished for this- and it was also rather embarrassing.
Although I’m grateful for my free haircut, please remember: cutting off a lot of hair can be traumatic to some customers. ‘Telling them like it is ‘can be hurtful and give the salon a bad name… I think that the trainees should be taught this also.
