What a disappointment this whole experience has been!
Having carefully planned our itinerary for our trip to Scotland, the spa break was to fall right near the end of the trip, for a relaxed day of pampering. We duly booked and paid for the break, and then tried to get our complimentary spa treatments booked. Even though we called the spa almost 2 weeks in advance, there were no appointments available whatsoever for the day we would be staying at the hotel.
The spa was very difficult to get hold of, and when we finally managed to speak to someone there, they offered us appointments on our day of arrival – at times when we would still be travelling to the hotel. We very nearly decided to cancel the booking altogether, but then decided to change our travel arrangements so that we could arrive for at least one of the treatments. The lady at the spa then also managed to arrange for an early morning appointment the following day, but only for an hour instead of the 90 minutes that were included in the package.
To be fair, the treatments that we did get were very good. The therapist was excellent, and we enjoyed our scrub, massage and facial, but we were short-changed, and it should not have been this hard to arrange everything. The spa informed us that Wahanda constantly do this to them – sell spa breaks without checking for availability. It’s a shame that the customer is the one to suffer, don’t you think?
As for the hotel, there is no way that our room could be classified as ‘4 star’. We were in a grotty little room with a dismal view looking out at the back end of the fire escape. When I complained about this, I was told we could upgrade to a better room for £60 per night. Er, no thanks. We’d already paid enough for this little excursion. The room was gloomy and looked very dated. Half the lights in the bathroom didn’t work. The cupboard was warped and wouldn’t close. The bed was too soft and ‘sproingy’.
Disappointed, we repaired to the lunch room for a bite to eat. We were ignored in the bar for a good 15 minutes before we were finally seated, and it was a further 90 minutes before we had finished our simple lunch of toasted sandwiches. We sat for ages waiting for the bill, and the waiter only deigned to notice us when we finally made a show of walking out in disgust.
On to dinner time, and we once again had a long wait to be seated in the restaurant. While the food was very, very good, the service was incredibly inattentive. We had the feeling that there was insufficient staff to properly look after all the tables, and this spoiled the whole experience. It’s not a terribly nice feeling being completely ignored.
This experience put a complete dampener on our whole holiday to Scotland, which was supposed to be a relaxing ‘Babymoon’ prior to the arrival of our daughter in a few months. We were so miserable in the hotel, that we actually cut our stay short and headed home a day early.
So, I’m looking at the next question, which is ‘How likely are you to recommend Wahanda to a friend?’.
