Treatwell meets... Louise Constad

From: Treatwell Meets...,

Treatwell meets... Louise Constad

With 30 years experience Louise Constad has become the go-to makeup artist to some of the world's most beautiful and famous faces (Sophie Ellis Bextor, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tina Turner, David Bowie and Julie Andrews to name a few). She's won awards for her work on high-profile productions like The English Patient, worked alongside world renowned photographers and directors including David Bailey, Mario Testino, Rankin and Helmut Newton, and has even created her very own range of beauty supplies and a makeup school for budding artists and ono-to-one tuition. In short, when it comes to beauty there are few things (and few people) Louise Constad doesn't know. When we had the chance to catch up with her earlier this month we couldn't resist asking her about the people she's worked with, the tricks she's learned and the beauty faux pas she just can't stand...

You’re famous for your signature red lip, a big trend this autumn/winter. Can anyone wear a red lip, and how do you choose the best shade for you?

Yes, anyone one can wear the fabulous red lip! Blonde hair, black hair, brunettes, white or grey, it looks great on all. Wearing a red lip is a personality thing and if you feel loud and brash it will suit you even more. Some people feel self-conscious with a red lip as it stands you out from the crowd, but this is what I love about it. Choosing the right red for you is easy - blondes tend to look great with a blue-based red and brunettes and dark skin-tones with an orangey red. If in doubt, just play safe with a pure red.

With party season on the horizon, what is the best and quickest way to transform your look from office-appropriate to party glam?

There’s no quicker way to change daywear into nightwear than red lipstick (of course). It takes 30 seconds then, KAPOW! Add a little eyeliner and perfume and you are ready to go.

What one product or gadget has revolutionised the way you do your job (or your own makeup) in the last five years?

M2Beaute Eyelash oil has revolutionised my makeup. My eyelashes have grown so long I no longer need to wear eyeliner. It has changed the look of my eyes for the better. I also always carry Aromatherapy Associates Triple Rose Moisturiser in my kit bag. This has an amazingly refreshing effect on my makeup any time of day. I just dab it in the palm of my hands and pad it on to my face. It always leaves my skin looking fresh and young. It’s not a gadget, but it certainly works.

With the weather about to change dramatically, what are your must-have beauty products to make it through winter looking groomed and glam?

A good moisturiser is the secret. My favourite is the previously mentioned Aromatherapy Associates Triple Rose Moisturiser, which does a brilliant job protecting the face from whatever the weather wants to throw at it. I also like to use a facial oil at night to give my skin a bit of a treatment and put back what the weather has taken out during the day.

You have worked with some of the most recognisable faces in the world. Who has been the most memorable and why?

The most memorable face I have encountered in my career has to be Julie Andrews. She was not only wonderful, beautiful inside and out, but she was my Mary Poppins in real life.

You’ve also worked with some of the most innovative photographers, have you picked up any tips on how to strike a flattering pose? And will you please share them with us?

The most important thing is not to be scared of the camera, look it straight in the eye and it will love you straight back - the camera loves a poser. That is how you will get your best pictures.

What is the best way to dig yourself out of a makeup rut?

Start searching through the latest magazines, tear out the pages you like the look of and copy the makeup on yourself. You will be surprised at how many different looks will suit you. You just need to be brave.

What is your favourite makeup look for autumn winter 2013?

The Return of the eye Kohl. It's back and in all kinds of colours!

What, in your opinion, is the biggest beauty faux pas a woman can commit?

Too thick foundation. It’s unnecessary and it looks terrible. That or a darker colour foundation that leaves a tide mark around the neck.

What is the best makeup trick you’ve picked up from your years in the business?

One taught to me by Tina Turner. She is the Queen of makeup tricks. She taught me how to bring light to the face (the secret to looking youthful) by putting your concealer either side of your eyes and alongside the bridge of your nose. As age creeps in we start to darken around the eyes, KNOCK IT OUT with a bit of light!
