In 2015 the anti-aging industry is expected to be at a whopping $291.9B in annual revenue, up from $115.5B in 2010. That’s a mere 152% growth in 5 years. Perhaps I should not be surprised by these figures given my borderline obsession with wrinkles and sun damage. No, it didn’t start at the healthy age of 33, but instead at 23 when I was still flush with idealism and collagen. Based on these stats I’m clearly not the only one with a bit of an obsession.
Coco Chanel once said “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” She forgot to add “well preserved”. I’ll try any product in search of eternal youth and only true friends know I’m not really joking about my 12 step skin care regimen. Like any Londoner I managed to find myself sucked into the Boots vortex. The associate...
I’m American. So it should be no surprise that I’m a bit tightly wound and overly concerned about the cleanliness of just about everything. Seriously, I like to line up my book bindings with the front edge of the book shelf.
I work - a lot. My major relationship is with a glass of wine and my laptop. So it may be shocking to hear that I jumped at the chance to attend Charlotte Watts’ de-stress yoga workshop at Evolve Wellness Center in South Kensington.
Stress is, in fact a strange bedfellow. We can’t kick him out of bed but we know it’s a bad idea sleeping with him. Over time we become alarmingly comfortable with being uncomfortable as stress and anxiety weave their way into our lives. We forget how to breathe, how to savour the moment, and how to be our best, kindest, selves. ...
If you’re a woman there’s a 98% probability you’ve read a Jane Austen novel and fancied yourself as Elizabeth Bennet. If you’re a man there’s a 100% probability you’ve cursed Jane Austen under your breath for putting such romantic notions into the minds of women. Not surprisingly, I’m of the first kind and was terribly excited for my spa break weekend at Luton Hoo.
Luton Hoo is a gorgeous estate-turned-hotel that even Mr. Darcy would be proud to call home. The grounds cover over 1,000 acres with a lake, golf course, spa, and gardens. They have a special croquet lawn if you feel like a picnic and wellies on hand if you want to go for a stroll.
The whole experience was just what you would expect. The rooms are a modern day version of a guest room at Mr. Darcy’s house. The food was...
The office Beach Body competition has ended. Ironically, we have no official winners so we are using our prize money to buy ice cream for everyone.
In the end I had a whopping 3 pound and 1% body fat loss. Not great results, but if I’m really honest I didn’t allocate enough time to make it work. Couple of things I learned are worth sharing.
Like most things worth having, it’s hard work. There’s no silver bullet. If you got liposuction tomorrow, the fat will come back if you don’t change your diet and exercise habits. I did, however, learn a lot from our community about what should work, what doesn’t work and what I need just for my body type.
You have to COMMIT to doing strength training or Pilates, or cardio-training even if you don’t feel like it. Focus on doing things you...
If you’re like me you’re a bit obsessed with feeling fabulous. Life is short, after all. You do strength training, get a monthly facial, and even squeeze in a relaxing massage to be your best self every day. When was the last time you did something just for your soul?
In studies of what makes people happy, researchers have found that giving back to your community has a huge positive impact on you. Giving back helps you develop greater compassion for others and will remind you how fortunate you truly are.
Volunteering can seem like a daunting task especially with an ever busy schedule. Don’t fret there are ways to give back if you have just an hour or a whole week. If you’re not sure where to start here is a little inspiration:
Not a lot of time?
There are several organizations...
Day – 22
Yes, the infinite wisdom of Yoda can even apply to getting your beach body back. Though, I have a sneaking suspicion Yoda was using the force to stay young and fit forever. As I don’t expect to be able to use the force anytime soon I’ll just have to sort out my diet and fitness issues using my street smarts.
Why IS it so hard to diet and get our health groove on? There are a couple factors that keep coming up in my own experience. Almost all of these require you to learn to listen to your body. First, what foods do you feel BETTER after eating? When was the last time you ate something and had that icky feeling in your digestive system? For me these are typically high sugar or processed food items.
I’ve recently been testing what foods I physically feel better after...
Day 8 -
Clearly, my diet ambitions are too big for my slightly tight britches. Extreme restrictions, cold turkey…not for me.
Time for a diet reboot. In fact, let’s stop calling it a diet. Diet is DIE with a T.
Let’s talk about making small, sustainable choices. Instead of onion rings with my burger I choose a salad with vinaigrette dressing. Instead of a cheese Danish I had scrambled eggs with salsa and black beans.
Ok, so yes, I’m still eating brownies, but I limit it to a much smaller portion. Life is too short to torture yourself and then obsess about it the rest of the day. What if I got hit by a bus tomorrow? I’d be really disappointed I didn’t have that last brownie.
My new goal is to move to more whole foods and vegetables while increasing activity. The 4-hour...
Day 1 was pretty easy. Protein, veggies, and legumes – check!
Day 2, well, nobody’s perfect. Brownies are my nemesis. An enormous box of brownies arrived at the office today. The universe was obviously pointing out that I ought to treat myself.
Like I said, nobody’s perfect. I’d rather have a bite or two than obsess for the rest of the day about how much I miss the chocolate gooey magic. Suffering isn’t sustainable on any level. (If you need a little brownie inspiration check out Dancing Deer peanut butter brownies - Oh and they sell them by the case.)
This diet is pretty restrictive and not for the faint of heart. No starch, no white carbs (corn, rice, flour, potatoes, etc), no dairy, no sugar, no fruits, no processed food. Someone asked me what I’m actually eating...
Day 0 -
Anyone who knows me, knows I'm obsessed with chocolate brownies. Actually anything with chocolate or wine in it. I will never be Kate Moss. In fact, I'm not sure Kate Moss has eaten in the last 15 years. If I ran into Kate Moss on Oxford Street she and I would have nothing to talk about - I love to eat. Life is too short for eating rice cakes or twigs and berries.
For the last 5 years I've been lamenting the loss of my beach body. It's there, somewhere, underneath this extra 15 pounds. Like most people my metabolism has slowed down over the years, which makes it harder and harder to stay lean. It used to be that I would forget to eat dinner one night and lose 5 pounds. I really, really miss those days.
For the next 4 weeks Wahanda is running a beach body campaign to help you...
