On a drizzly October morning, it’s easy to find yourself day dreaming about that round the world adventure you’ve always wanted to book. Picturing yourself, carefree, backpack on, guidebook in hand, ready to take in incredible sights and sample local delicacies wherever you happen to lay your head.
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but for most of us this adventure will remain a fantasy this winter. We wish we could wave our magic wands (wahands, if you will) and transport ourselves to somewhere exotic, but alas it doesn’t work like that. Travelling means months of saving, possibly leaving a job – or convincing your boss to substantially increase your holiday allowance – and saying goodbye to your nearest and dearest for a few months. Things would be so much easier if you could just go around the world in a day. But actually, you can – well, the beauty world anyway...
When it comes to beauty and personal grooming, nowhere in the world takes things quite as seriously as Hollywood. In this star-filled town, looks are pretty important and the residents are pretty Die hard when it comes to treatments. That is, perhaps, why Hollywood is responsible for the most extreme bikini wax to date. We’ve all heard of the Brazilian (removing all hair bar one thin strip at the front) - well the Hollywood wax takes it a step further leaving you completely hairless. Sounds intense, but like so many things that come out of Tinsel Town this wax soon gained itself a cult following and is now one of the most popular styles across the globe.
Also known as the permanent blow dry or keratin conditioning treatment, the Brazilian blow dry is a long-lasting, hair smoothing treatment popular in – you guessed it – Brazil. The treatment works by coating the cuticles in a keratin rich solution of cocoa oil, white and red clay, vitamins and proteins before blow drying the hair smooth and sealing the treatment with a hot iron. Locks are left beautifully frizz-free leaving you with much less to do when it comes to styling. Then it’s up to you to remember not to wash your hair for the next 72 hours, and if all goes to plan the gorgeous glossy effect will last for up to three months.
The Indian head massage is a traditional healing treatment that has been practiced as part of family life in India for over a thousand years, to ward off illness and strengthen relationships through physical affection. This particular massage has found its place in the modern world as an effective way to help detox, relieve stress, fatigue, insomnia, headaches and sinusitis while aiding concentration by clearing the mind of distractions. The massage involves sitting upright while a therapist uses a variety of massage styles over the neck, shoulders, face and scalp. Massages last between 20 and 45 minutes and common effects include extreme relaxation and a greater need to urinate – which is just your body getting rid of nasty toxins.
More commonly known as the Turkish massage, this treatment takes place in a Turkish bath (hammam) and aims to relax muscles while thoroughly refreshing the skin. The treatment begins with roughly 20 minutes lying on a heated platform (usually marble stones) to work up a sweat in preparation for exfoliation. Wearing a coarse mitt, your therapist will then enthusiastically scrub your body, removing dirt and dead skin. After a quick cool rinse to get rid of any grime, the massage begins. A Turkish massage is typically quite vigorous and involves kneading the entire body. Next, a sack (or pillowcase) soaked in olive oil soap and warm water is inflated and rubbed all over the body. Satisfied you are squeaky clean, your therapist will then lead you to a cooler room for some well deserved relaxation.
If the word ‘massage’ to you means gentle hands, exotic oils and sometimes even a quick snooze, you’ve never had a Thai massage. Also known as the ‘Thai yoga massage ‘, a traditional Thai massage involves bending, stretching and even a couple of well-known yoga positions. The good news? You don’t have to move a muscle. Your masseuse will bend you into positions, holding you there while kneading muscles, stimulating pressure points and occasionally even walking all over you – in a good way. The aim of the Thai massage is to ease muscular tension, boost circulation and expel any poisonous toxins in your tissues. A traditional Thai massage can last anything from 30 minutes to two hours and is performed in complete silence which is why it is thought to be one of the most effective forms of massage for clearing the mind.
