It’s a cruel twist of fate that the season of mince pies and novelty confectionary should coincide with the coldest time of year. When weather conditions make it pretty impossible to get outside and burn off your indulgences, we’re left with limited options: man up and brave the cold, put down the Terry’s Chocolate Orange or prepare to let out your NYE party dress. None of the above particularly appeals to us, so we thought we’d look into another option: exercising in the comfort of your own home. As we prepare to go into 2014, there is - of course - an app for everything. Here are our three favourites for exercising in your living room...
As anyone who has every tried their hand (legs and hips) at yoga before will know, practise makes, if not perfect, better. With the option to choose between three different practices, three different difficulty levels and three different durations, this handy app is great for squeezing a practise into a busy day and is a nice way for beginners to get started at their own pace - without worrying about more experienced yogis judging their downward facing dog. Select the best practice for you, grab a yoga mat (a towel works if you don’t have one), and set your device at the head of it. Then press play and Pocket Yoga will guide you through a class. If you get stuck take a look at the screen where an illustration will show you what you should be doing. £1.99 from iTunes
When we heard about a 7-minute workout that was causing a stir (and leading to considerable weight loss) all over the world we couldn’t wait to give it a go. Thanks to the 7 Minute Workout app (which recently became the number one fitness app in over 60 countries) getting involved was as easy as working out for seven minutes sounded. Don’t be fooled, while the app might be easy, the workout is not. With twelve high intensity bodyweight exercises, each lasting for 30 seconds with 10 seconds rest between exercises these seven minutes involve a great deal of hard work, sweat and (in some cases) tears. Fortunately the work out is voice prompted, so you can complete seven minutes without constantly checking your progress (not that you’d have time) meaning those 420 seconds go by in a flash. If you were one of the hundreds of thousands of people who downloaded a 0-5k running apps this year and, having met your goal, fancy a new challenge (not to mention a six-pack), then Situps 0-200 is for you. Like many running apps, Situps 0-200 helps users build up the intensity (and their abdominal muscles) over a ten-week course, gradually increasing in difficulty to match your growing fitness level. If 200 situps sounds like your idea of hell don’t worry, week one begins with five minutes of stretching followed by three reps of five situps (with 30 seconds of rest between) before finishing up with another five minutes of stretching. In fact, despite not having done a situp in months (read years), weeks one and two actually proved a little too lenient for some of us at Wahanda Towers. We skipped ahead to week three and, now on week seven we haven’t given up yet and are determined to have washboard abs by January. Or, at least not to feel guilty about that second (read fourth) mince pie. Free on iTunes
