Award season kicked off this week at the 2014 Golden Globes and with a whole host of gorgeous gowns and decadent ‘dos, the red carpet did not disappoint. After a little analysis we’ve come to the conclusion that Cate Blanchet, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence weren’t the only glamorous winners of the evening. The true winner of the night – according to Jessica Chastain, Helen Mirren, Kerry Washington, Margot Robbie, Kate Beckinsale, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts… we could go on – was, in fact, the nude lip. With variations of the neutral shade all over the red carpet, here are our favourites…
Amy Adams looked stunning when she picked up her award for Best Actress. Her understated look, achieved through swept up hair and minimal make up was fresh-faced and girly; the perfect accompaniment to a plunging crimson neckline. Amy's nude lips with a hint of pink accentuated her glowing skin without taking away from (or adding too much to) that show-stopping gown. Famed for her long flowing ‘Nashville’ locks, Hayden Panettiere debuted a new ‘do at this year’s Golden Globes, wearing her hair a little shorter, straighter and slicked back. Hayden’s new hair gave her look an edgier feel but her neutral makeup kept it soft and feminine. A set of red lips would have made quite the statement, but Hayden’s barely there lipstick ensured the overall effect was pretty rather than dramatic. Copy the look with a nearly clear gloss or tinted lip balm. We love Carmex Moisture Plus in Peach Sheer: £4.49 from Boots.com.

With tumbling curls and feline eyes, Olivia’s red carpet look was sultry, sexy and – thanks to a clever lipstick choice – not over done. Olivia’s slightly frosty nude lips ensured this uber feminine look remained flirty rather than vampy, allowing that gorgeous emerald dress to take centre stage. Following the age old rule of eyes or lips and never both, Kerry complemented her dramatic smoky eyes with a pair of pretty pale lips and classic Hollywood curls. Lipsticks with mauve undertones tend to flatter darker skin and the slightly berry tint in this shade brings out Kerry’s flawless complexion beautifully. The nude lip was a big part of that classic 1960s look we all know and love, so it made the perfect accessory to Julia’s Audrey Hepburn inspired beehive. Chic, sleek and feminine this is a great look for the office as well as the red carpet, something Ms Roberts’ demonstrated perfectly by pairing it with her monochrome shirt dress.
